The country is said to be experiencing its worst 24 hours since the heatwave began. “It is certainly the most difficult 24 hours of the fire season,” Kostas Tsigas, president of the Fire Service Officers’ Union, told the Greek public broadcaster on Wednesday.
“The day is expected to be very challenging, with a very high fire risk across most of the country,” the Fire Service’s spokesperson, Vasilios Vathrakoyannis, said on Wednesday.
On Tuesday alone, 82 new wildfires broke out. Combined with strong winds, drought and high temperatures, they have created enormous challenges for firefighters.
