On the world’s longest train journey, the passengers will start in Lagos, Portugal where they will first make their way to Portugal’s capital city of Lisbon. After Lisbon, the train will then make its next stop in the Basque region of Spain. Passengers then head to France, Russia, China, Vietnam, and Thailand before arriving in Singapore.
On the way to Singapore, the train makes stops at incredible cities such as Paris, Moscow, Beijing, and Bangkok. The longest part of the train ride is a 40-hour trek from Paris to Moscow. Passengers will have ample time for rest, however, as there are overnight stays that allow for rest or exploration at each of the eleven stops along the way. In total, the journey requires passengers to obtain seven visas to legally complete the world’s longest train journey.
The train fare costs around $1,350 in total, which is comparable to flight prices from Portugal to Singapore. However, the train ride requires significantly more planning than a flight, as passengers have to have their visas ready, and they need to figure out the connect trains and seat selection. From Vietnam to Cambodia and Malaysia to Singapore, there might a need to connect by bus.
The recent opening of the train line from Laos to China was crucial in making the longest train journey possible. The move should boost the economy of Laos, as people will be ferried to China and, of course, Singapore.
The idea of being able to travel from Portugal to Singapore has been the dream of many train enthusiasts for decades. It was their efforts, along with the collaboration of several railway companies and the opening of the train line from Laos to China that made it all possible. The current longest train journey in the world breaks the record of the previous one, which was from London to Singapore, pushing the boundaries of train travel.
