From public interest to feeding frenzy

The police officers’ video in Larnaca even caught the attention of Katerina Kainourgiou. Trade unionist Nikos Loizidis was called to make statements on her “Super Katerina” programme on Alpha Greece. The president of the police corps branch of the “Equality” union sent the message that all 5,500 police officers should not be tarred with the same brush.
What matters in this case, however, is that an issue which should indeed have received publicity, but been presented in a way that served the public interest, spilled over to the point of no return. From serving the public interest, we descended into gossip, the broadcasting of details irrelevant to the real issue, and finally into a feeding frenzy, disregarding the collateral damage of this gossip-driven approach.
