George Kambosos Jr’s next big fight may have been revealed, with a world-title clash between the Greek Australian and Vasiliy Lomachenko set for Australia.
In what is being called one of the biggest boxing fights in the nation’s history, Kambosos looks for world-title redemption against the Ukrainian world superstar.
Perth is the firm favourite to host the blockbuster with promoters in deep talks and investigating a number of host options across the country in Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne.
The US is also being considered but Western Australia is said to be the main contender with the 15,500 capacity RAC Arena in Perth the front runner to stage the IBF lightweight world title showdown, according to The Australian.
Reports say the fight could take place in April and will be aired in Australia on Fox Sports‘ Main Event pay-per-view channel.
However, the lightweight bout between ‘Ferocious’ Kambosos and ‘Loma’ cannot be locked in until the IBF orders the contest, which is expected to be December 9 when Devin Haney steps in the ring.
Haney, the IBF lightweight world champion, is set to vacate the title as he steps up to super lightweight for his next fight.
This decision leaves the door open for the 30-year-old Sydneysider and the 35-year-old Lomachenko to go head to head for the world title.
It will be the No.2 rank vs the No.3 rank, in what would be one of Australia’s most significant fights of all time.
Both were supposed to fight last year but the Russo-Ukrainian War saw Haney take Lomachenko’s place, and subsequently defeat Kambosos in back-to-back bouts.
The Greek Aussie is looking to continue his career renaissance, which began in July with a win over Maxi Hughes to claim his sixth world title.
