Gloria Gallery presents the new artistic proposal of George Gavriel. The exhibition will open on Friday, October 11, 2024 at 7:30 p.m. The academic Christos Hatziioannou will perform the opening ceremony.
George Gavriel was born in Nicosia and studied at the “Surikov” Academy of Fine Arts, Moscow. He graduated in 1987 with a degree in “Master of fine arts”. From 1990 to 2008 he worked as an art teacher in Secondary Education, from 2008 to 2017 he worked as an art inspector in M.E. and since 2017 he has been working as a Principal in Secondary Education schools. At the same time, he is active in the artistic events of Cyprus and abroad, with frequent solo and group exhibitions. In 1984, the Surikov Moscow State Art Institute, organized his first solo exhibition in the halls of the Academy. He has participated in the Beijing Biennale in 2010, 2012, 2017 and 2019. The National Museum of Art of China purchased his participating artwork at the 7th Beijing International Biennale. In 2013 he was awarded the State Illustration Award of Cyprus. His works are hosted in the books of Modern Greeks of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade of the Gymnasium. In 2018 he participated in the 1st Larnaca Biennale in Cyprus.
Like all artists, George Gavriel expresses through his works his love for our place, his experiences, and reflections on what is happening in Cyprus and in the world in general in his own special way.
The work of George Gavriel opens a new window in the artistic events of our place. A window that only free-thinking artists, far from defined frames and boundaries, can open. He states that he puts his art at the service of society, creates works that fight injustice and encourage participation in political action. At the same time, he remembers the beauty. He probably recalls it and leans on it like a button in the difficult fight. It oscillates between the awakening of aesthetic pleasure and the mobilization against the vicious forces of the system.
In the works of George Gavriel there is always that spark that distinguishes the true from the counter, the work of art from the beautiful representation. Through his drafts, the world is recorded and seen with his own eyes, as he experiences it and dares to make it public by sticking his tongue out sharply in the system. He is original, he experiments with materials, with style, with composition. Sometimes it stigmatizes the system, sometimes it blurs, sometimes it explores the beauty of the world and sometimes it mocks or makes fun of it.
The exhibition opens on October 11 and will last until October 26, 2024.
