Grace (Grammatikí) Tsardakas captured the hearts of Australian television viewers with her appearance on Channel 10‘s popular game show Deal or No Deal.
“My granddaughter needed some money for her honeymoon, as she’s getting married this Sunday. So, I suggested we try to participate in the show!” Grace said.
A long-time fan of the show, Grace applied and, along with her granddaughter April, passed the interview stage. When she was notified that she would be part of the studio audience, she was told there was no guarantee she would be selected to play. But luck was on her side—her name was called, giving her the chance to compete for the $100,000 grand prize.
In a fun twist, April revealed that if her grandmother won more than $20,000, she had promised to get a Deal or No Deal tattoo.
Throughout the game, host Grant Denyer asked Grace about her life and encouraged her behind the scenes when the cameras weren’t rolling.
“He was amazing. He kept telling me to keep doing what I was doing because the audience was loving it. So that’s exactly what I did!” Grace said.
Her enthusiastic and upbeat attitude stood out, even when she opened cases revealing high amounts. “I don’t mind—I’m here to have fun,” she said.
In the end, Grace trusted her instincts over her granddaughter’s advice to hold on to her original case. She walked away with $11,120, which she plans to give to April to help fund her honeymoon in Greece.
“For me, if you win more than $10,000, it’s a success. Sure, $100,000 would be great, but it takes a lot of luck to get there,” Grace said.
A love story in the spotlight
But this wasn’t the first time Grace found herself in the spotlight. On Friday, February 14, she starred in one of two videos shared online by Fronditha Care in celebration of Valentine’s Day.
The videos featured two couples from the organization’s Social Activities Groups reminiscing about how they first met and their first dates.
“We’re the couple of the year,” Grace joked at the start of the video.
Grace and her husband, George, shared the story of their first encounter at her parents’ milk bar. George had stopped in for a milkshake and was immediately captivated by her smile. Their first date was at the Forum Theatre, where they watched an Elvis Presley movie.
A few years later, they walked down the aisle together, and now, 60 years on, they remain as in love as ever, cherishing new memories with their family.
“I have a ring with three diamonds—each one represents before, now, and after. And the now diamond is the biggest. It’s the ring George gave me for our 50th wedding anniversary, symbolizing that the now we share together is the most important,” Grace said.
What’s the secret to their lasting bond? “Understanding and mutual respect.”
