The Cyprus Committee on Sports Ethics and Protection is set to sign a memorandum of cooperation with the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) on Monday at 11:00, marking a significant step towards promoting Olympic values in Cyprus sports.
Committee Vice President Efthymios Efthymiou and National School of Ethics head Christina Ioannou are in Thessaloniki to finalise the agreement between three parties: The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), the Committee on Sports Ethics and Protection, and the National School of Ethics.
Under the memorandum, AUTH professors will travel to Cyprus to deliver public seminars at the Cyprus Sports Organisation facilities.
The initiative follows the establishment of the National School of Ethics, which was announced on October 21 at a Presidential Palace ceremony.
The school’s formation was inspired by discussions between Efthymiou and former Cyprus Sports Organisation Director General Costas Papacostas.
Dr Christina Ioannou leads the school, supported by scientific advisors Dr Nicos Kartakoulis and Dr Andreas Malatos.
At the school’s announcement, Efthymiou highlighted the urgent need for such an institution by citing serious corruption cases in sports, including an incident where a federation employee, whose father was a board member, was paid for 104 overtime hours over just four days – physically impossible given there are only 96 hours in four days.
The National School of Ethics began operations in late October, with Dr Ioannou delivering its first lecture at The G C School of Careers’ Greek Primary School, focusing on Sports Integrity, Olympic Values, and Fair Play.
Dr Ioannou emphasised that “the joy of participation matters more than victory in competition.”
