Greek and Turkish Cypriot trade unions are to hold a joint event to celebrate Labour Day on May 1.
The event was announced at the Home for Cooperation on Tuesday, with two marches set to converge in the buffer zone in front of the Ledra Palace hotel.
The Greek Cypriot event will begin at 5pm in Nicosia’s central Eleftheria Square, with Peo secretary-general Sotiroula Charalambous and Akel leader Stefanos Stefanou set to make speeches, before participants march to the buffer zone.
The Turkish Cypriot event will begin half an hour later at 5.30pm at Kugulu Park, outside Nicosia’s city walls, with participants set to walk the short distance into the buffer zone.
Tuesday’s announcement of the event saw the unveiling of a joint declaration, which reads that “on this symbolic day for the international working class, with our joint declaration, we reignite the message that we do not compromise with division and that the reunification of our country remains a priority for the working class of Cyprus.
“With the solution of the Cyprus problem and the reunification of our country, we will have the opportunity to continue our common fights in conditions of peace and security within the framework of a united economy, with a unified system of labour relations and uniform working conditions for all.”
The joint declaration also said that Greek and Turkish Cypriot workers “stand with the oppressed Palestinian people and against the Israeli genocide.
“At a time when imperialist powers are shedding blood across the world, fascism and nationalism are resurrecting, and the voices of division are being raised, we are raising class solidarity and the common struggle of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot workers,” it stated.
The event is being supported by Koop-Sen, Dau-Sen, Ktoeos, Ktos, Dev-Is, Bes, Koop-Sen, Ktams, and Peo.
