As the second anniversary of the Tempi railway disaster approaches, the Greek Australian community is joining calls for nationwide protests in Greece on February 28, demanding a thorough investigation and concrete safety reforms.
Speaking at the Antipodes Festival in Melbourne on Sunday, Bill Papastergiadis, President of the Greek Community of Melbourne, as well as Panagiotis Ppyros, President of the Greek Community of South Australia, reaffirmed the community’s unwavering demand for truth and accountability.
“The Greek diaspora worldwide sends a resounding message: No forgetfulness, no cover-ups—justice and safety for all, now,” Papastergiadis told Neos Kosmos.
In a statement, the President, Board, and members of the Greek Orthodox Community of New South Wales expressed their deepest condolences to the victims’ families—many of whom lost young loved ones in the tragic train collision. They reiterated their full support for the families’ pursuit of truth and accountability.
“It is unacceptable that, two years later, the investigation remains incomplete and no clear verdict has been reached regarding the causes and those responsible for this disaster,” the statement reads.
The Greek Orthodox Community of NSW urged the Greek government to ensure full transparency and accountability, warning against any efforts to conceal the true causes of the accident. They also called for comprehensive railway reforms to prevent future tragedies.
“We also raise our voices alongside the families of the victims and the Greek people in the protest on February 28, 2025, for a full investigation into the accident. We stand with them. We, the Greeks of distant Australia, will support in every way possible the struggle of the victims’ families for justice and hope that the necessary measures will be taken to prevent another ‘Tempi tragedy’,” the Board of Directors of the Greek Orthodox Community of NSW stated.
Various Greek Australian organisations have also issued statements urging the diaspora to attend a demonstration outside the Greek Consulate in Melbourne this Friday, showing solidarity with those seeking answers and accountability in Greece.
