Greece’s Transport and Infrastructure Ministry has planned improvements to air navigation, local media reported. The measures were initiated by Transport and Infrastructure Minister Christos Dimas after a major radio communications failure shut the country’s airspace on January 4.
The plan is a roadmap for the modernization of air traffic systems, the upgrading of existing infrastructure and the strengthening of institutional capacity.
Late on Sunday, it was reported that inspections carried out by the National Cybersecurity Authority and the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority found no signs of sabotage or a cyberattack. The radio frequency failure was traced to a faulty antenna on Mount Geraneia, which serves the Athens Air Traffic Control Centre, covering Greek airspace.
The prosecution has tasked the cybercrime unit to determine whether there is evidence of actions amounting to dangerous interference with aircraft communications and to identify the source of the disruptions across frequencies of the Athens Flight Information Region.
Airports in Greece are gradually returning to normal operations, Greek media reported.
In mid-December 2025, the European Commission decided to refer Greece to the Court of Justice of the European Union for failing to put in place the necessary measures to design and publish performance-based navigation (PBN) procedures at Greek airports, the online edition of Kathimerini reported.
