The opening night film has been announced for this year’s Greek Film Festival, as European cinema aficionados anticipate the full program release in the coming days.
The 29th Greek Film Festival kicks off on 15 October across Melbourne and Sydney with the romantic comedy “Akou Poios Milaei” (Hear Who’s Talking).
Directed in 2023 by Thodoris Niarchos, this year’s opening night film brings together a cast, including actor Yannis Tsimitselis and stand-up comedian Labros Fisfis.
Played by Ilias Meletis, the protagonist role, Fotis is a life coach, whom the viewer meets at a dead end in his life, both personally and professionally.
Fotis’ life is in disarray due to his long working hours.
In the film’s media release his dilemma is explained as, “the sessions, which once fulfilled him professionally, no longer offer him the same inner satisfaction and he has also become completely isolated in his personal life.
“At this critical junction for himself and his career, a voice he is familiar with will take action, a voice he knows only in his head. Will Fotis be able to find… Fotis again and fall in love before all is lost?”
Interviewed by Dimitri Kallos for Community Horizons NSW, lead actor Ilias Meletis, who also co-produced the picture, said that the protagonist’s disorientation will resonate with most of us, as was the case for himself.
“I believe it presents the contemporary human being, who all day is devoted to making money, how he will work, and, as a result, allows life to go on without living it,” Ilias said.
“Without living, the experience we should be living as humans, working less and making more but on the counter living more experiences is which stay with us forever.”
He said it was “a great honour” giving him “great pleasure and satisfaction” to have the film chosen as the opening picture of the Greek Film Festival.
“I am confident that the audiences in Australia will also enjoy the film and I believe it will also go to other countries like Canada, in various festivals in the USA, and will have a second life outside of Greece.”
The film’s official soundtrack, features modern laiko singer Apostolia Zoi in a pop appearance.
In Melbourne the opening feature of the Greek Film Festival plays at the Astor, Palace Cinemas Como and Balwyn and for the first time, the Festival heads North playing at Palace Cinemas Pentridge.
In Sydney, the opening night will show at Palace Cinema Norton St.
The full line-up of the festival is soon to be announced for Sydney and Melbourne (taking place from 15 and 27 October) as well as Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra and Perth finalising screenings for October and November dates.
