Residents living on the Greek island of Rhodes have ordered inside because of the storm, with schools told to shut across the island as roads became blocked due to the water flow
An entire Greek island has been flooded as it is slammed by a major storm working across the Med. Residents in Rhodes are being left stranded because of the sheer amount of rain hitting the traditionally sunny paradise.
Dramatic clips show the Greek holiday favourite under a deluge of rain as small idyllic roads turned into huge bodies of water as island is hit by a huge weather system. Storm Byron has already made landfall and impacted thousands of residents and tourists alike.
And with the Greek weather service issuing a red alert for many of its islands, residents are being told to batten down the hatches for the foreseeable future. Schools have also been told to shut down as a precautionary measure.
According to the Sun, torrential rain has been battering the island on Thursday (December 5), as drastic footage shows muddied water crash into shops and walls along the coast. The violent nature of the storm has also meant that harder objects such as branches, street debris and crates are also being sludged along.
One horrifying video caught the sheer strength of the water as it rushes past, ploughing into a town as flash flooding took. Cars have been left abandoned and almost completely submerged, with only the roof visible.
Another clip shows a road on the island quickly being hit by the storm and having the floodwater submerge as one motorist is pummeled by the rain, with the windscreen barely providing shelter. Police on Rhodes have said there has been severe flooding across several major settlements, including Lindos.
Residents have now been told to keep indoors in order to keep themselves safe, as the island is set for more poor weather conditions. Local government officials have also ordered all schools on the island to remain closed on Friday (December 5), with the reason for the closure being “severe storms and dangerous conditions”.
As well as this, local officials have told residents and tourists alike not to move too far from a safe place in case the already poor conditions worsen even more. However this is not the first time that Rhodes has been targeted by flash floods.
Back in 2024, the island was hit again by flash floods which continued into early 2025, in a freak event that scientists put down to climate change. The warming Mediterranean seas had been to blame, which only makes the winter rainfall worse.
But Rhodes is not the only target for Storm Byron as it has already blasted through the eastern side of the Med. Other major Greek islands including Lesbos, Mykonos and Santorini are expected to be affected by the rain.
The rainfall has become so strong that Greece’s meteorological service has issued a red weather alert for “intense, long-duration downpours, thunderstorms, hail and maybe gale-force winds”. The warning will last throughout Friday before calming down on Saturday morning (December 6).
