The Tunis Junior African Cup, held in Tunisia’s capital, marked a successful start to 2025 for Greek judo, with athletes Alexandra Papagiannaki and Marios Kapsouros achieving significant podium finishes.
Nineteen-year-old Papagiannaki secured the gold medal in the women’s -70 kg category, achieving three consecutive victories. This accomplishment represents her most significant achievement at the junior level, adding to her previous bronze medal from last year’s European Cup in Skopje.
In the men’s -81 kg category, 20-year-old Kapsouros earned the silver medal after two wins in three matches, marking his first major distinction in EJU and IJF tournaments.
In the final, Papagiannaki defeated Algeria’s Aliouane with an Ippon, following earlier victories over Botswana’s Nongambe in the quarterfinals and the USA’s Gonzalez in the semifinals.
Kapsouros advanced to the final after defeating Tunisia’s Sami Mehri and Britain’s Aylward, both by Ippon, before falling to Tunisia’s Rayen Mehri in the gold medal match.
