Greek swimmer Vangelis Dumas has triumphed in the 100m breaststroke, capturing the gold medal on the final day of the European Junior Swimming Championships in Vilnius, Lithuania.
The 16-year-old athlete from Alexandroupolis, representing Olympiacos won the final with a time of 1:00.80. This impressive performance follows his earlier achievement of 1:00.66 at the “Acropolis” meet in April.
Dumas outpaced Spain’s Nil Candeval and Bulgaria’s Maxim Manolov, who both finished second with a time of 1:01.10.
The victory marks Greece’s first gold medal in a European Junior Championship in five years, since Apostolos Papastamos’s double win in the 200m and 400m medley in Kazan. It is also the only medal for the Greek team in this year’s competition.
Vangelis Dumas is also set to compete in the Paris Olympic Games as part of Greece’s 4x100m mixed medley relay team.
Artemis Vasilaki, despite her efforts, missed the podium in the 400m freestyle, finishing fifth with a time of 4:12.59.
She fell short of the Greek national record (4:11.47) she set at the “Acropolis” meet, which would have secured her a bronze medal.
Hungary’s Mina Abraham won the event with a time of 4:09.85, followed by Italy’s Lucrezia Domina with 4:11.01 and Belgium’s Sarah Dimond with 4:11.48.
Fellow swimmer Despina Pyrili competed in the 100m backstroke final, finishing seventh with a time of 1:01.88, just shy of the Greek national record for girls (1:01.80) she set in May at the National Championships.
The 16-year-old Pyrili, representing Panserraikos, has two more years in the junior category and aims for further achievements.
She hopes that from next season she will no longer need to travel daily from Serres to Kavala for training, as the local swimming pool has been closed for several months.
