An exhibition by Greek Australian artist Angela Kiki Konstantinopoulou exploring themes of freedom and cultural identity will be held at NSW Parliament in May 2026, marking a significant anniversary in Greek history.
Titled Ode to Freedom, the exhibition will run from 5 to 28 May and coincides with the bicentenary of the Exodus of Messolonghi in April 1826, a pivotal event in the Greek War of Independence. The historical moment, widely regarded as a symbol of sacrifice and resistance, forms a key reference point for the exhibition.
Presented by AHEPA Sydney & NSW Inc, the exhibition brings Konstantinopoulou’s work into one of the state’s most prominent public institutions, drawing connections between historical struggles for independence and contemporary expressions of identity within the Greek Australian community.
According to organisers, Ode to Freedom reflects shared democratic ideals and values between Greece and Australia, including resilience and unity, as seen through Konstantinopoulou’s artistic practice.
AHEPA Sydney & NSW Inc President Jim Papanagiotou said the exhibition was intended to acknowledge both artistic expression and historical memory.
“This exhibition is not only a celebration of art but also a tribute to the timeless ideals of freedom and unity, and the strong bonds between Greece and Australia,” Papanagiotou said in a media release.
The exhibition has received support from the NSW Government and the Greek Consulate in Sydney, with AHEPA acknowledging the involvement of the Hon. Steve Kamper MP and Greek Consul General George Skemperis in facilitating the event.
The exhibition will be open to the public during its scheduled dates at NSW Parliament House.
