Greek PM Calls For Resumption of Cyprus Talks

Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met on Wednesday during the NATO Summit sessions in Washington and discussed the Cyprus issue, Yeniduzen reports.
According to the Cyprus News Agency, the meeting lasted about 45 minutes and was attended by the Foreign Ministers of both countries as well as the heads of their diplomatic offices.
Mitsotakis calls for the resumption of Cyprus negotiations
According to Greek government sources, Mitsotakis stressed that Cyprus, as an EU member, cannot remain divided 50 years after the tragedy of 1974 and called for the resumption of negotiations to resolve the Cyprus issue. According to the news, Mitsotakis and Erdoğan agreed to meet again during the UN General Assembly in New York in September.
The Greek Prime Minister will proceed to New York after the NATO Summit and will meet with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday. The meeting will address Greece’s role as a temporary member of the UN Security Council for the 2025-26 term, the Cyprus issue, and the work of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin.
Turkey makes no mention of Cyprus in its statement
In a statement regarding the meeting, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan noted that Turkey continues its efforts to enhance the spirit of solidarity with Greece within the framework of the principle of good neighbourly relations and that these efforts will increasingly continue. According to the Presidential Communications Directorate’s statement, the meeting addressed Turkey-Greece bilateral relations, regional, and global issues.
Erdoğan stated that positive efforts to end the conflicts in Ukraine and Palestine should be enhanced and that it would be beneficial for all countries in the region to work towards establishing peace in these areas. According to the statement, the meeting was also attended by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and the President’s chief advisor on foreign policy and security issues, Ambassador Akif Çağatay Kılıç.
