A 20-year-old Greek woman lost her life early Sunday in a road accident in Nicosia, Cyprus, authorities said. The crash occurred around 3:10 a.m. on Archangelos Michael Avenue in Engomi when a rental car carrying eight passengers, including the driver, veered off course.
According to police, the car, driven by a 20-year-old man, struck the wall of a nearby building and a traffic sign near a roundabout. The vehicle came to a stop after the collision, which left several passengers injured.
The 20-year-old woman and two others—another 20-year-old woman and the front-seat passenger, also aged 20—were rushed to Nicosia General Hospital. One of the women was pronounced dead by the attending doctor, while the other woman remained hospitalised for further examination. The male passenger suffered a fractured elbow and was discharged after receiving treatment.
Authorities reported that the driver was tested for alcohol and found to have a blood alcohol concentration of 55 μg/%, far exceeding the legal limit of 9 μg/%. He was arrested under a court warrant to assist with the investigation.
The Nicosia Traffic Police are investigating the causes of the accident.
