The oldest bakery in the city of Paphos has resumed operations after decades of abandonment, serving as a reminder of the city’s bicommunal past.
Faiki’s Bakery, named after its Turkish Cypriot owner, has been restored to working condition as part of Paphos Municipality’s historic centre regeneration project.

The establishment, which operated throughout the 1950s and early 1960s, was originally owned by Hanum Faiki before being purchased by Mustafa Ahmet Rashit, one of Paphos’s wealthiest Turkish Cypriots.
The bakery later passed to four Greek Cypriot siblings, the Psomas brothers, but they were forced to relocate their business following the intercommunal troubles of 1964. The building subsequently fell into disrepair.

The municipal authorities plan to operate the restored bakery as a social enterprise.
At today’s reopening ceremony, the ovens produced traditional bread and pastries for attending guests, including municipal council members, organisation representatives and local residents.
The event, which featured musical entertainment by Maria Konikkou, drew numerous Paphos citizens eager to witness the resurrection of a establishment that was once integral to daily life in the city.
The restoration project aims to highlight a significant chapter in Paphos’s history when Greek and Turkish Cypriots lived together peacefully.
