For days, the Hellenic Police (ELAS) officers had already located the weapons that were later found in the possession of the 13 Turks arrested in Evros.
According to a report by protothema.gr, the police had discovered the cache where the weapons were hidden and set up an ambush, waiting for the Turks to cross into Greece by boat so they could arrest them.
Specifically, the officers had laid in wait by the river in Tychero, Evros, and caught the Turks as they attempted to cross. None of the 13 had any identification documents, and they were carrying sacks in which their weapons were hidden.
ELAS officers estimate that the 147 pistols and dozens of magazines found were destined for the notorious Turkish gang known as the “Daltons.”
Some of these weapons were expected to be trafficked within Greece, and possibly some would have ended up abroad.
The investigation into the case is still ongoing.
