India and Bharat: How the country got its name
A dinner invite sent to G20 world leaders referred to President Draupadi Murmu as the President of Bharat instead of the President of India. As expected, it has led people to wonder whether the country is likely to be renamed. But how did India get its name in the first place? Through out history multiple names were associated with the country. The earliest one was Meluhha seen in Persian records as reference to the Indus Valley Civilisation. In a later millenium Jambudvipa, Nabhivarsa were seen. Persians called the land Hindustan. ‘Bharat’, ‘Bharata’, or ‘Bharatvarsha’ has its roots in Puranas and the Mahabharata. The name India has its origins from ancient Greek references. The makers of our Constitution fiercely debated which name to use. Finally, two names were recognised: India and Bharat.
