The International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Greece has launched a new children’s book, Tales from Home, a collection of folk stories and fairytales spanning from Afghanistan to Greece. This inspiring book highlights the transformative power of unity and hope, particularly in times of displacement and uncertainty.
“Tales from Home underscores the importance of intercultural dialogue and serves as a testament to how embracing our diversity can reveal our shared humanity and foster social cohesion—both in Greece and globally,” Dimitra Kalogeropoulou, IRC’s Country Director in Greece said.
She added, “We hope this book becomes a tool for public discussions on refugee integration, finding its place in classrooms and homes, and setting an inclusive tone that bridges cultures and generations.”
The book was born out of a 2022 workshop organised in collaboration with Arkista – “Art for Kids in a Stable” and The Boat Collective, a refugee-led art group.
Women and children from Afghanistan, Iran, and Greece gathered in a supportive space to share their experiences, fostering mutual understanding and acceptance.
The stories they created together celebrate cultural diversity while connecting people across borders and generations.
Illustrated by Iranian artist Sahar Ghorishi, Tales from Home aims to inspire young readers, reminding them of the strength found in togetherness and shared human experiences.
The book serves as a bridge between cultures, emphasizing the importance of unity.
