The International Olympic Committee on Monday said Japan’s Morinari Watanabe is among the seven candidates bidding to succeed Thomas Bach as president.
The 65-year-old Watanabe, currently in his second term as the president of the International Gymnastics Federation, has been an IOC member since 2018. He would be the first Asian president if elected at the 143rd IOC Session in March in Greece.

IOC Vice President Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr. of Spain and World Athletics President Sebastian Coe of Britain are among the other candidates confirmed on the ballot by Sunday’s deadline.
To date, seven IOC presidents have been from Europe and one from the United States.
