Oscar-nominated actor Jude Law is set to portray Russian President Vladimir Putin in the upcoming film The Wizard of the Kremlin, directed by French filmmaker Olivier Assayas. The movie will explore the early years of Putin’s political career, offering a unique perspective on one of the world’s most prominent leaders.
Law, a two-time Oscar nominee, described the role as daunting. In an interview published on Jan. 9, 2025, he admitted he has yet to fully prepare for the project. “At the moment it looks like an Everest to climb,” Law said. “I was going, ‘Oh God, how am I going to do this?’ But anyway, that’s for me to sort out.”
The story behind the film
The film is based on Giuliano da Empoli’s bestselling 2023 book of the same name. It follows the fictional Vadim Baranov, a former artist and television producer who crafts a false reality to influence society and gain proximity to the heart of Russian power. Paul Dano stars as Baranov, with Alicia Vikander and Zach Galifianakis also featured in the cast.
Baranov’s journey takes an emotional turn when he falls in love with Ksenia, a free-spirited woman who challenges his worldview. According to a synopsis, their relationship could steer him away from his dangerous path. Assayas and Emmanuel Carrère co-wrote the screenplay, blending drama with political intrigue.
Law’s role as Vladimir Putin in the film is expected to be significant, although details about his character’s involvement remain under wraps.
Recent projects show versatility
Beyond his upcoming project, Law has been active in other ventures. He recently starred in the 2024 action-thriller The Order and appears in the Disney+ series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. These roles highlight his versatility as an actor, transitioning seamlessly between genres.
A Personal Milestone
In December 2024, Law was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The ceremony was a deeply personal moment for the actor, coming shortly after the death of his mother, Margaret.
“And actually, I lost my mom. So we had to delay it,” Law said. “But in a very odd way as a kind of final gift, it meant that a few more of my family could actually be here.”
Law attended the ceremony with his wife, Phillipa Coan, and his two eldest children, Rafferty, 28, and Iris, 24.
Reflecting on the occasion, Law described it as “emotional and very touching.” He said the event served as a reminder of the journey he’s taken in his career and the support of his loved ones along the way.
