SYRIZA leader Stefanos Kasselakis has directly accused Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and his New Democracy party of being behind a barrage of homophobic slurs and hate speech directed at him online.
The abuse followed the publication of Kasselakis’s wedding gift list on a pro-government website, which led to a flood of derogatory comments. Among the offensive remarks was one particularly vile comment: “Die and burn in hell… commies.”
Kasselakis, who is openly gay, claimed that the timing and nature of the comments suggested a coordinated effort orchestrated by New Democracy operatives. He specifically pointed to the involvement of “paid ND trolls” and implicated Mitsotakis’s official residence, Maximos Mansion, in the attack.
“The publication and the immediate onslaught of hateful comments were so well-orchestrated by Maximos Mansion that it cannot be coincidental,” Kasselakis stated.
The SYRIZA leader expressed deep concern over the targeting of his personal life, saying, “I hold Mr Mitsotakis solely responsible for all the hateful and homophobic comments we are receiving during this deeply personal moment.”
This incident has ignited a significant debate in Greece about the prevalence of online hate speech and the role of political parties in either curbing or fueling such attacks. Many are calling for stricter measures to be implemented to hold individuals accountable for online harassment and to prevent political figures from being targeted in such a manner. The controversy also raises questions about the ethical responsibilities of media outlets and their role in potentially exacerbating tensions by publishing private information.
As the discussion continues, the incident underscores the growing concern over the impact of online hate speech on public discourse and the need for comprehensive strategies to address this issue within Greece’s political landscape.
