Japan personal data leaks hit record high 13,000 cases in FY 2023
TOKYO – Personal data leaks in Japan jumped some 70 percent to a record 13,279 cases in fiscal 2023, a draft annual report by a government panel showed Tuesday, underscoring poor data management in both the public and private sectors.
The total was boosted by municipal governments reporting nearly 1,000 cases after they were newly included among those required to report such leaks, while companies saw a sharp increase.

Japan seeks international coordination to thwart online manga, anime piracy
TOKYO – The government said Tuesday Japan will strengthen coordination with foreign investigative authorities to thwart online piracy of the country’s anime and manga, as overseas sites hosting such media content remain hard to crack down on.
The government also said it will speed up the deletion of pirated materials and blocking of connections to them through cooperation with large technology firms providing digital infrastructure or platforms for the sale of products and services.

Over 40 spots in Japan log record-breaking rainfall for May
TOKYO – More than 40 locations across Japan on Tuesday experienced record-breaking rainfall for May, with downpours observed across wide swathes of the country due to an active front, Japan’s weather agency said.
The Japan Meteorological Agency has warned individual prefectures of possible intense showers through Tuesday night, providing forecasts 12 hours in advance for Gifu, Shizuoka and Aichi prefectures in central Japan and urging vigilance against landslides and river flooding.

Japan constructs world’s 1st wood satellite, launch possibly in September
KYOTO – Japanese researchers said Tuesday that they have successfully constructed the world’s first wooden satellite, with the tiny cube-shaped object expected to be sent into space aboard a SpaceX rocket launched from the United States, possibly in September.
“LignoSat,” a blend of the words ligno, a prefix meaning wood, and satellite, is the outcome of about four years of development efforts by a team involving Kyoto University and Sumitomo Forestry Co., with the aim of harnessing the environmental friendliness and low cost of wood in space development.

China deploys robot dogs during military exercise with Cambodia
BEIJING – China has deployed robot dogs, including one equipped with a rifle that can conduct assault missions, during an ongoing joint military exercise with Cambodia, according to Chinese state-run media.
In the “Golden Dragon 2024” exercise, a robot dog weighing over 50 kilograms and carrying an assault rifle on its back spearheaded an attack on a building where several mock terrorists hid, China Central Television reported.

Hong Kong police make 1st arrests under new security law
HONG KONG – Hong Kong police on Tuesday made its first arrests under the city’s new security legislation that was enacted in March, just days ahead of the 35th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown.
Police confirmed five women and one man, aged between 37 and 65, were arrested on suspicion of acting with seditious intention. Secretary for Security Chris Tang said the arrests were made in connection with a Facebook page that rallied support for prominent democracy activist Chow Hang-tung, who is among the six.

Tennis: Kunieda looks to spark wheelchair tennis revolution
TOKYO – Shingo Kunieda, who retired last year from his legendary wheelchair tennis playing career, has embarked on a new journey as a coach in the United States in a bid to make his sport as big as it possibly can be.
In January, Kunieda traveled to America to develop junior athletes on an invitation from the United States Tennis Association in his hopes that a wheelchair tennis boom there could invigorate the sport around the world.
