Large crowds are expected to gather at Panagia Kamariani in Red Hill this year for the celebration of the Holy Epiphany, with favourable weather forecast for Melbourne creating ideal conditions for one of the most significant feasts of the Orthodox calendar.
Festivities will begin early on Tuesday with a solemn Divine Liturgy at the church, attended by faithful from across the wider region. Following the service, clergy and parishioners will proceed in an organised procession to the Rye Foreshore Reserve, where the traditional Blessing of the Waters will take place at 12.30pm.
The ceremony is expected to attract many members of the Greek community, young and old, who return each year to take part with reverence and emotion in the sacred ritual. A highlight of the day will once again be the immersion of the Holy Cross into the sea, with young members of the community diving into the water to retrieve it, a tradition deeply rooted in Greek and Orthodox identity, symbolising the revelation of the Holy Trinity and spiritual renewal.
Following the religious service, celebrations will continue with a Greek festival held at the same location. Attendees will be able to enjoy Greek music, food and drinks in a festive atmosphere that brings together faith, community and celebration.
“We have worked very hard for this day and we want it to be a true celebration for everyone,” Archimandrite Irineos Koikas told Neos Kosmos. “We invite the entire Greek community to join us in celebrating the holy day of Epiphany and then to enjoy our festival, in a spirit of unity, faith and joy.”
Organisers are encouraging strong community participation, noting that Epiphany offers a special opportunity for collective prayer, the continuation of tradition, and the strengthening of bonds within the Greek-Australian community.
