Recently the creators of a forthcoming new documentary telling the story of the Anzac involvement in the Greek campaign of 1941 were welcomed into the Victorian Parliament by the Lemnos Gallipoli Commemorative Committee’s President Lee Tarlamis OAM MP.
The new documentary has been developed for the Lemnos Gallipoli Commemorative Committee by a specially created project team consisting of Director, Producer and Editor John Urwin, Director and Scriptwriter Dr Peter Ewer, Associate Producer Jim Claven OAM and Vicki Kyritsis who has been responsible for community liaison.
While John Irwin was unable to attend, the group were accompanied by the documentary’s narrator well-known news and political affairs journalist Barrie Cassidy. The purpose of the meeting was to provide him with an update on their progress to date.
The 90 minute documentary entitled “Anzac The Greek Chapter” tells the story of the Anzacs who served in the Greek campaign of April-May 1941. It tells this story vividly in the words and images of those who served themselves, drawing on over 130 hours of unique interviews, with added footage and still photographs from archives from across the world. With access to these resources, the documentary reveals the story of the Anzacs in Greece in 1941 as has never been seen before.
The Committee received funding for the project from the Saluting Their Service Commemorations Program of the Australian Government’s Department of Veterans’ Affairs, with additional financial and in-kind support provided by the Committee.
The project is the latest major project to be successfully undertaken by the Committee, following on from the erection of the Lemnos Gallipoli Memorial in Albert Park, the Australian Pier Memorial on Lemnos, the publication of the “Lemnos & Gallipoli Revealed” book and the various photographic exhibitions that have been held.
The purpose of the meeting was to provide Lee Tarlamis with an update on how the project is progressing. He said that it was a particular pleasure to welcome Barrie Cassidy to the Parliament Barrie has kindly offered to lend his distinctive voice as the narrator of the documentary.
“Barrie’s generosity in participating in our project is more than appropriate given his strong family connection to the documentary’s story, his father having served during the Greek campaign in the battle of Crete”, Tarlamis said.
Tarlamis reported to Neos Kosmos that the film is now completed and is scheduled for its premier screening as part of the Greek Film Festival this coming October. Screenings will be held in Melbourne and Sydney, with Brisbane to confirm soon. The Film Festival screenings will be followed by a number of community screenings. Watch this space.
Tarlamis said that he and the Committee were proud to have been associated with this important new legacy project commemorating both the service of those Anzacs who served in the Greek campaign but also as a vivid reminder of the Hellenic link to Australia (and Victoria’s) Anzac tradition. He took the opportunity to thank the project team for their great work in realising this important commemorative initiative.
