Champion racehorse Black Caviar, who made history in Australia with her unbeaten run of 25 victories, has died at 17 from laminitis, a debilitating disease, eventually rendering the horse unable to walk.
A statement on Saturday on behalf of Black Caviar’s ownership group broke the sad news.
Greek Australian Jill-Taylor Nikitakis, whose family was one of the champion’s custodians, took to social media to praise Black Caviar’s legacy: “one that transcends the track.”
“[…] it’s a testament to heart, strength, and the relentless pursuit of excellence,” she wrote.
“The journey she took us on was unforgettable; each race, each triumph, was filled with memories that will last a lifetime. Black Caviar didn’t just run; she inspired a nation, and we are honoured to have witnessed her greatness firsthand.
“From the highs of the finish line to the love she gave in her downtime, she truly left an indelible mark on all of us. Here’s to celebrating her legacy, one that will forever be cherished in the heart of Australian racing.”
Black Caviar retired in 2013 with a stellar career, having won 25 times from 25 starts and taken $7,953,936 in prize money.
“She was a remarkable horse who gave us all the ride of a lifetime and wonderful memories,” trainer Peter Moody said in the statement.
At the peak of her fame, she was hailed as the ”fastest horse in the world”.
Among the highlights of her career was winning the 2012 group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes (1200m) at Royal Ascot, England.
“She was simply the best,” Victoria Racing Club chair Neil Wilson said in a statement.
“Black Caviar was more than a champion racehorse, she was an important part of life for many people.
“Her brilliance, her presence and the pleasure and inspiration she gave to so many was a special moment in time for horse racing and sport. She has created a piece of history that will be remembered forever, and it was a privilege for all who saw this wonderful equine athlete in action.”
