Less than 5,000 Cypriot students at UK universities

A total of 4,780 Cypriot students are currently enrolled at one of the more than 40 UK universities, the British Council said on Tuesday.
Since Brexit came into effect in 2020, the number at UK universities plummeted by nearly 50 per cent.
In the 2017-2018 academic year, 9,730 Cypriots were enrolled but the massive increases in tuition fees made studying in the UK unaffordable for many.
While the number of students dropped significantly, the preferred subjects of those studying in the UK remain same. Business, engineering, law, computing or subjects aligned to medicine remain the top five subjects chosen by Cypriot students.
Due to historical and linguistic links, the UK used to be the second most popular study destination after Greece.
Cypriots with British citizenship, however, will still be able to benefit from home fees for courses beginning by January 2028.
For those considering to study in the UK in spite of surging tuition fees, two UK education exhibitions will be held in Nicosia and Limassol on February 21 and 22 at the Hilton and Atlantica Miramare hotels respectively.
