More details have emerged today as to the source of the threats against President Christodoulides, a text that has raised the security level around the President, with authorities looking for answers.
According to the evidence uncovered so far and made available to Philenews, it appears that the threats were sent through social media and related as made public yesterday, to a misappropriation case against Turkish businessman Simon Aykout, accused of illegally purchasing Greek-Cypriot properties in the occupied territories. Aykout is currently in custody.
The same sources say that the threatening message was received through a mobile phone not connected to Cypriot numbers, but security services are aware of the provider.
Based on this finding, it has been clarified that the message was not sent from prison, nor is there any such indication from the evidence received last Friday.
The investigation is gathering pace notwithstanding the sensitive nature of the case. The focus at this time is to accurately determine the source of the message, specifically the electronic address.
Security measures around the President have clearly been raised, but he has not restricted his movements, nor changed his busy schedule.
Confirming the threats last night, Christodoulides noted that he had ‘absolute confidence’ in the authorities.
