Since the early hours of Sunday, a major operation by the Hellenic Police has been underway in Crete, aiming to dismantle a criminal organisation which, according to authorities, had developed multifaceted illegal activity in recent years. Members of the group are allegedly involved in drug trafficking, extortion, and money laundering.
The investigation and arrests are being coordinated by the Chania Security Sub-Directorate, which has so far proceeded with the arrest of more than 15 individuals.
Among those arrested are people well known in the local community—businessmen with strong public profiles and active involvement in the island’s affairs—causing significant shock and upheaval. According to the same sources, computers and mobile phones are expected to be seized, and house searches are currently ongoing.
What has caused particular concern is the fact that, once again, uniformed personnel are implicated in the case. Specifically, four military and police officers are accused of being members of the organisation: one police officer—possibly two, as a second is under scrutiny—two members of the Hellenic Army, and one officer of the Hellenic Air Force.
The investigation remains in full swing, and developments are expected to be rapid and dramatic. The news of the arrests has already sent shockwaves through the local community in Crete, while the police continue to investigate the scope and connections of the criminal network.
