The Consul General of Greece in Sydney, Georgios Skemperis, presented a commemorative medal of the Hellenic Republic to Robyn Brunton, in honour of her father’s military service in Greece during 1940–1941.
According to a statement by the Consulate General, Brunton, accompanied by her daughter and granddaughter, shared the moving story of her father, Gunner William Bruce Gleeson. She recounted how Gleeson fought against advancing German forces at several locations across Greece before being captured on the shores of Kalamata while attempting to escape to Crete.
He was subsequently transported to a prisoner-of-war camp in Austria, where he remained until 1945, when he was liberated and returned to Australia.
“Greece does not forget those who fought by her side,” the Consulate’s post concluded.
Brunton expressed her gratitude to the Greek government for the commemorative medal recognising her father’s service. “It means a great deal to me,” she said.
