A festive gathering of Melbourne’s Greek entrepreneurs, academics, and community leaders took place on Saturday at Nikos Cakes in Fairfield. The annual event, now in its 20th year, is spearheaded by well-known philanthropist and businessman Grigoris Kaias, alongside fellow entrepreneurs Kostas Saristavros and Dimitris Karalakis.
This year’s special guest was Metropolitan Myron of New Zealand, attending with the blessing of Archbishop Makarios of Australia. Metropolitan Myron delivered a heartfelt address highlighting the challenges faced by Hellenism and Orthodoxy in New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa, and surrounding regions. He praised the tireless efforts of the Metropolis in supporting Orthodox churches and orphanages, improving the lives of Orthodox Christians and local communities alike.
Kostas Saristavros welcomed attendees and expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of the initiative. He urged Melbourne’s Greek community, organisations, and churches to unite in preserving Hellenic heritage, language, and identity, warning against the decline of Greek traditions in the diaspora.
Greek Community of Melbourne President Vasilis Papastergiadis applauded the efforts of the event’s organisers and emphasised the importance of bolstering Hellenic culture and community activities.
Nikos Loupas also reflected on the growing awareness around baptisms and adoptions facilitated by Australian Greeks for children in need.
Metropolitan Myron further detailed the missionary activities in Fiji, including the establishment of three Greek Orthodox churches and an orphanage, underscoring the challenges and triumphs of these initiatives.
The event attracted notable Greek-Australian businesspeople, academics, and community figures, including Tasos Douvardzidis, Chair of Ethnic Schools of Australia, among others.
