The legacies of legendary composers Mikis Theodorakis and Manos Hatzidakis were celebrated by more than 500 students from the Greek Community of Melbourne’s schools with a special event in honour of the 100-year anniversary of their births.
The students came together on Saturday 29 November at Robet Blackwood Hall and presented numerous songs by the two composers, traditional dances and theatrical scenes from Greek films associated with their music.
The production was accompanied by music via the piano of school choir coordinator Betty Exintari, and through three community artists in Tony Iliou, Iakovos Papadopoulos and Vyron Triantafyllidis.
Students also supported the choir with their own instruments.
The script, direction and song selection were led by the Schools’ drama teacher, Katerina Putachidou, with musical preparation by Exintari.
Dance selection and teaching were undertaken by Jenny Iliou, Vangelis Matthaiou and Maria Karakotta, while general coordination was overseen by the Deputy Principal, Christina Soumi.
Over 50 teachers contributed throughout the year and behind the scenes on the day to put together the event.
Maria Bakalidou, Principal of the GCM Schools, noted that this year’s celebration was one of memory, music and pride in honour of two significant composers who shaped the cultural identity of modern Greece.
“We are deeply moved by their enthusiasm and dedication. We remain committed to ensuring that every child in our community discovers and loves Greek culture,” Bakalidou said in a press release.
GCM President Bill Papastergiadis praised the educators and students that contributed to the event, describing it as “a living testament to the dedication and passion of our teachers”.
“The active participation of families and the enthusiasm of the students fill us with pride and give us the strength to continue with even greater enthusiasm,” Papastergiadis said.
The event featured numerous attendees, including the Consul General of Greece in Melbourne, Dimitra Georgantzoglou, the Acting Education Coordinator, Maria Triantafyllou, as well as members of the GCM Board, and representatives of Pharos Alliance.
