Athens-listed Metlen Energy & Metals, formerly known as MYTILINEOS Energy & Metals, has signed two long-term strategic agreements with Rio Tinto.
The deal secures a steady bauxite supply and alumina offtake, reinforcing its expansion plans for the Aluminum of Greece plant in Agios Nikolaos, Viotia.
As part of its investment to expand alumina production, Metlen aims to increase output from 865,000 to 1,265,000 tons per year. Under the bauxite supply agreement, Rio Tinto will deliver 14.9 million metric tons of bauxite from its CBG mine in Guinea over 11 years (2027-2037), complementing Metlen’s local mining operations.
Meanwhile, the alumina offtake agreement commits Metlen to supplying 3.9 million metric tons of alumina to Rio Tinto from its new plant between 2027 and 2034, with an optional three-year extension until 2037.
