The charity event My Mother’s Meal took place last Sunday, offering a unique blend of gastronomy, tradition, and generosity to those in need.
The initiative was spearheaded by Alexandra Vakitsidou, known for her philanthropic work in both Australia and Greece, and was held in the courtyard of the Nativity of Christ Church in Port Adelaide. Speaking to Neos Kosmos, Vakitsidou explained that the concept for My Mother’s Meal was born last year with the goal of providing a warm meal for the homeless.

“My idea was to offer a meal prepared with love to those in need. The community responded with enthusiasm, and this year we decided to continue with a special theme,” she said.
This year’s event was inspired by the old Greek tradition of sympetheria, where in many villages, the in-laws would visit the bride, who would prepare her mother’s best dishes to impress them.
“The aim was to honour our mothers’ cooking, reconnect with our traditions, and combine this with an act of kindness,” Vakitsidou noted.

Fourteen “brides” took part, bringing dishes inspired by their mothers’ recipes, filled with flavours rich in memory and heritage. Following tradition, the “brides” also danced, as was customary for their “mothers-in-law” to observe.
“It was wonderful to witness the joy and vibrancy of the attendees. The food was full of flavour, the hospitality was unparalleled, and the music was so uplifting that even those holding full plates couldn’t resist dancing!” Vakitsidou said, describing the atmosphere.

She also paid tribute to the mothers who poured their love, culture, and culinary skills into each dish, as well as the volunteers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes.
“The generosity and warmth of everyone involved made this event truly unforgettable,” she added.
The event’s proceeds will be donated to the Hutt Street Centre, a local organisation supporting the homeless. According to Vakitsidou, the funds raised will either be provided as financial assistance or used to purchase food and essential supplies in collaboration with the centre’s management.

“The Hutt Street Centre is a vital support network for Adelaide’s homeless community, providing daily meals and assistance. With the money raised, we will either meet specific needs or donate food and essential items,” she explained.
Looking ahead, Vakitsidou revealed plans for another charitable event next month, The Engagements, coinciding with Greek Independence Day on 25 March.
“We are continuing with a new meal inspired by ‘engagements,’ keeping our traditions alive while helping those in need,” she said, highlighting the importance of merging social contribution with cultural heritage.
