Cyprus ended their three-game losing streak in Group B of League C with a 2-1 victory over Lithuania at Larnaca’s “AEK Arena” in the 5th round of the Nations League, ensuring their stay in League C.
Led by Sofronis Avgousti, Cyprus took the lead in the 18th minute through Kastanos, dominating the first half. Lithuania equalised early in the second half with Gineitis, posing a greater threat. However, an exceptional goal by Marinos Tzionis in the 63rd minute, just seven minutes after he came on as a substitute, secured the crucial win for Cyprus.
Germany and Netherlands advance, Hungarian coach hospitalised
Germany and the Netherlands booked their quarterfinal places with a match to spare in the group stages of the Nations League. Sweden, with Eliasson starting (substituted in the 75th minute for Holm), celebrated their promotion to League B with a 2-1 win over Slovakia.
Albania, featuring AEK’s Strakosha as goalkeeper, drew 0-0 with the Czech Republic, leaving the fight for promotion to the top tier of League 5 wide open. The visitors lead with 8 points, followed closely by Georgia and Albania on 7 points.
In Group C of League A, Germany crushed Bosnia 7-0 at the “Europa Park” stadium, securing the top spot and a quarterfinal berth. The Netherlands similarly dominated Hungary, winning 4-0 in Amsterdam, claiming second place in their group.
The match at “Johan Cruyff Arena” was marked by a 15-minute stoppage in the 7th minute when Hungary’s assistant coach Adam Szalai collapsed. According to Hungary’s football federation, Szalai was conscious during his transfer to the hospital after receiving immediate medical attention from the team’s medical staff. Players and staff rushed to assist him on the scene.
Following their defeat, Hungary finished third in their group and will fight to stay in the top tier of the tournament through the playoffs.
