Nicosia aims at Cyprus UN personal envoy to provide impetus for talks, President says

The appointment of a personal UNSG envoy on the Cyprus issue is a Greek-Cypriot goal in order to push forward for the resumption of negotiations, President Christodoulides said on arrival at a conference of government coalition centre wing party DIKO.
He told reporters that following a relevant statement by Antonio Guterres at a multi-party conference on Cyprus in Geneva on Tuesday, the matter was discussed further with the UN yesterday (Friday) and a further communication will possibly be held this afternoon.
President Christodoulides made clear that official announcements on the individual that will undertake the role and their mandate will be made by the Secretary General himself.
On the confidence building measures, also announced as possible initiatives at the Geneva conference, he said that the government will be conveying to the Turkish-Cypriot side, through the UN, on four meeting options next week, so the two sides can start substantive discussions.
He stressed that the first meeting should be between himself and the Turkish–Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar in order to provide the necessary impetus on the measures, that might include resumption of demining, youth initiatives and restoration of cemeteries.
On the economy, Nicos Christodoulides expressed satisfaction with the latest upgrade of the Republic’s credit rating by the DBRS agency, noting it was a vote of confidence to responsible public finances, allowing for targeted social policy.
