Our concern for the Kurdish people
Source: in-cyprus.com
While all eyes are fixed on Damascus and the transfer of power in Syria following the fall of the Assad regime and the rise of the jihadist organisation Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the Kurdish population in the country’s northeastern region is also paying a heavy toll in blood.
Both in the cities of Manbij and Kobani, as well as in areas outside Aleppo, jihadist organisations continue their attacks, notably with support from Turkish fighter aircraft.
The Kurdish people, who heroically resisted the jihadists in recent years, now find themselves alone, surrounded by many enemies, particularly Turkey. With Russia’s help and American acquiescence, Turkey is running rampant in northern Syria and threatening the Kurdish Rojava. The Democratic Union Party (PYD) Kurds, who held a march in Nicosia yesterday, insist that what is happening in Syria today amounts to yet another Turkish invasion.
Greece and Cyprus must understand that the Kurds are their only true allies in the region. They have a duty to speak up for them because if the Kurds are lost, so too is any hope for the Middle East.
