A pilot programme using satellite imagery and artificial intelligence has identified over 800 illegal dumpsites across Cyprus between April and July 2024, PERIOPSIS, a spin-off of the CYENS centre of excellence, announced on Wednesday.
The DumpMapper service, implemented in six municipalities including Nicosia, Larnaca, and Paphos, detected 820 dumping incidents ranging from small rubbish piles to larger sites exceeding ten cubic metres.
The project revealed that municipalities with larger geographical areas and dispersed populations, such as Ypsonas and Lakatamia, had the highest frequency of illegal dumpsites.
Significant waste accumulation was also observed near public roads and dead ends in larger municipalities.
PERIOPSIS stated that the pilot programme marks “a significant milestone in combating illegal waste dumping and littering in Cyprus”.
The company views it as a global innovation and an example of successful public-private collaboration using emerging technologies.
The findings are expected to inform municipal waste management strategies across Cyprus.
PERIOPSIS plans to expand the DumpMapper service internationally, with initial interest from municipalities in Greece and India.
