It was reported that a group of citizens claiming to be the original owners of Turkish Cypriot properties on the Mackenzie* coast of Larnaca called for “transparency” from the Greek Ministry of Interior, Kibris Postasi reports.
According to Greek Cypriot daily ‘Haravgi’ and other newspapers, a group of citizens who call themselves the real owners of Turkish Cypriot properties in the Mackenzie area called on the Ministry of Interior to immediately move forward with transparency, and with an open dialogue while respecting the real owners of Turkish Cypriot properties.
According to the report, the citizens’ group also expressed their anger at not being informed about the new agreements or contracts and the lack of agreement.
The group also stated that although they are the real owners of the Turkish Cypriot properties and have been patiently waiting for the signing of new contracts since 2017, they have not received any invitation to be involved in the negotiations or the signing of new contracts.
The group also stated that they were following the developments regarding Turkish Cypriot properties in the Mackenzie region through the press, that their tolerance was at an end. They will not hesitate to exercise all their legal rights to protect their rights even if they did not receive any guarantees from the state, they said.

*The ownership of the land on the Mackenzie coast of Larnaca, Cyprus, is part of a broader and complex issue rooted in the history of the island, particularly in the events surrounding the division of Cyprus in 1974.
Prior to 1974, Cyprus had a mixed population of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots living in various parts of the island, including Larnaca.
In 1974, following a coup by Greek Cypriot nationalists and subsequent Turkish military intervention, the island was effectively divided into two regions: the Turkish Cypriots in the north and the Greek Cypriots in the south.
Many properties were abandoned as people fled or were displaced to the respective sides of the island. This led to the contentious issue of property ownership, with both Greek and Turkish Cypriots claiming rights to properties on the opposite side of the divide.
Mackenzie Coastline
The specific issue regarding the Mackenzie coast involves properties that were owned by Turkish Cypriots before 1974.
After the division, properties in the south that were owned by Turkish Cypriots came under the control of the Republic of Cyprus (Greek Cypriot administration), and vice versa in the north.
In the south, the Republic of Cyprus (Greek Cypriot side) administers these Turkish Cypriot properties through a Guardian of Turkish Cypriot Properties, overseen by the Ministry of Interior. The Guardian is responsible for managing these properties until a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem is found.
Claims and Transparency:
The group of citizens likely consists of descendants or representatives of Turkish Cypriots who originally owned the properties on the Mackenzie coast. They are demanding transparency from the Greek Cypriot Ministry of Interior regarding the management and potential use or sale of these properties.
The Republic of Cyprus maintains that the properties are held in trust and that they remain the rightful property of their original Turkish Cypriot owners or their heirs, although this is subject to legal and bureaucratic processes. [Ed.]
