Panathinaikos daring to upset Olympiacos at ‘Karaiskakis’

The two “eternal enemies” of Hellenic football are all set for a blockbuster top-of-the-table clash with Panathinaikos striving to score a massive win and strengthen their push for the championship.
Olympiacos hosts the “Trifylli” at “Georgios Karaiskakis” Stadium on Monday morning (AEDT) in the Greek Super League’s 20th round, with the two sides coming into the clash with all to play for.
The Greens currently sit four points off their rivals in second place, meaning victory would bring them just one behind the league leaders and put significant pressure on them heading into the back end of the regular season.
On the other side, the Piraeus giants have a golden chance to extend their lead over Panathinaikos to seven points which could prove invaluable as they approach a tricky season finish that includes fixtures with PAOK and AEK.
The “Trifylli” will be hopeful that Olympiacos’ midweek European game will have fatigued them ahead of the game, adding an extra challenge for the “red-whites” as they seek to end their nine-match winless streak against Panathinaikos in all competitions.
PAOK will have a close eye on that fixture, hoping desperately for Olympiacos to drop points, though their priority will be trying to beat Levadiakos at “Toumba” ground.
Aris travels to face last-placed Lamia at “Athanasios Diakos” ground in a bid to end a four-game winless run, with the Fthiotida side equally hoping that new coach Thanasis Staikos can produce an end to their own brutal winless streak in the league (now up to 18 matches).
AEK is set to face Panetolikos at “Agia Sophia” Stadium on Sunday morning with their target being to enact revenge after losing the reverse fixture last year.
Asteras Tripolis is aiming for a fifth straight success in their home meeting with Kallithea, a side that comes in with some confidence after winning two of their last three outings.
OFI competes with Panserraikos in Crete as both teams seek maximum points to strengthen their push for a finish in the 5th-8th league spots.
Volos takes on Atromitos at home in the round opener on Saturday morning with both clubs looking to bounce back from losses last matchday.
