Patras blaze – Scorching wildfires rage in Kaminia as thousands evacuated in Greece
A raging wildfire swept through large parts of the coastal village of Kaminia, in southern Patras, on Wednesday, as soaring temperatures triggered massive blazes that forced thousands to evacuate.
Footage captured from a lifeguard rescue boat shows the ferocious wildfire tearing through the forested hills, as thick plumes of smoke billow into the sky.
Greece has been ravaged by raging blazes in recent weeks, with reports of up to 20 major fires burning across the country. Temperatures peaking as high as 40 degrees Celsius have intensified heatwaves across the region, further fuelling the blazes, according to a forecast by the national weather service EMY.
Nearly 5,000 firefighters have been mobilised and 33 planes deployed, while thousands of residents have been evacuated to safety.
