Cyprus is experiencing its worst natural disaster and most devastating wildfire in the island’s history, which has claimed two lives, injured several people and caused extensive material damage, the Cyprus Peace Council said on Friday.
More than 120 square kilometres of forest, agricultural land, rare riparian vegetation and numerous homes have been destroyed in the blaze, according to the peace organisation’s statement.
The council expressed shock at the human losses and offered sincere condolences to the victims’ relatives, whilst also extending sympathy to those who lost their livelihoods and properties.
The organisation praised firefighters, aircraft operators and thousands of volunteers for their sacrifice and dedication in tackling the disaster.
The peace council highlighted the significant wave of solidarity from the Turkish Cypriot community as proof that “our people unite in difficult times and see Cyprus as an indivisible whole”.
“Bi-communal separation cannot be the future,” the statement said. “We must continue joint actions for the protection and promotion of the natural environment”.
The Pan-Cyprian Peace Council called on environmental and progressive organisations to collaborate in the major effort to restore the natural environment and the island’s invaluable environmental heritage.
The group said environmental issues should become a main priority for Cypriot society, both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.
