The Pharos Alliance, newly registered as a not-for-profit organisation, is set to champion the promotion and revitalisation of the Greek language in Australia. Officially registered with Consumer Affairs Victoria, the Alliance represents a significant milestone in the effort to preserve Greek language and culture.
Following a vote by members of the Working Party, Professor Emeritus Joseph Lo Bianco AM was elected President of the Pharos Alliance.
Lo Bianco, a long-standing advocate for language preservation, has been integral to the Alliance since its inception.
The organisation takes its name from his 2017 research for the Modern Greek Teachers’ Association of Victoria, later published in the book ‘Pharos: The Vitality and Presence of Modern Greek in Contemporary Australia’.
“It’s an honour to be elected President of the Pharos Alliance,” said Professor Lo Bianco, emphasising the importance of continued efforts to ensure the longevity and vitality of the Greek language.
Supporting him in this mission are Vice President Yiota Stavridou, Secretary Denise Diakodimitriou, Treasurer Vasso Zangalis, and their respective assistants, Dr Stephie Nikoloudis and Eva O’Hehir.
The Alliance’s inaugural Symposium will take place on Sunday, December 1, at La Trobe University, from 12pm to 7pm.
The event will provide a platform to discuss the Alliance’s systematic efforts to rejuvenate Greek language teaching and usage, share research findings, and exchange ideas with experts in language revitalisation from Australia and abroad.
Participation in the Symposium is free and open to educators, parents, and the broader community.
Interested attendees are encouraged to register online at Eventbrite.
