A group of Romanian pilgrims visiting Mount Athos in Greece had to make a trip to the hospital after they got food poisoning from eating wild mushrooms during a hike.
According to the Associated Press, Greek officials said the group of 11 were visiting the Orthodox all-male monastic community in Mount Athos.
Authorities in the semi-autonomous community in northern Greece said none of the men’s lives were in danger.
They were being treated Wednesday in hospitals in Halkidiki, near Mount Athos, and Thessaloniki.
The group had been staying at the skete of St. Anne, a smaller community that comes under the jurisdiction of a monastery, said police.
On an overnight hike up the mountain, they gathered and ate wild mushrooms for dinner, taken ill afterwards.
Mount Athos and its late medieval monasteries is a popular destination for pilgrims from across the Orthodox world.
