Award-winning winemaker Nikos Lazaridis, whose efforts put the wider Drama region on the international winemaking map, passed away on Friday.
In 1987, believing in the potential of the region, the first integrated winery in Drama was established, which later became Nico Lazaridi.
With roots in Tuscany and Macedonia, Lazaridis based his family business on the goal of producing internationally recognised wines with character and longevity.
His wines are also available in Australia.
Among the areas of Drama, Agora was chosen for its ideal morphology and microclimate.
There, overlooking the Paggaio, Falakro, and Menoikio mountains, the modern winery was built in 1997.
With the aim of making the most of the potential of the Macedonian land, a new winery was established in 2000 in Platanotopos, Kavala, at the foot of Mount Paggaio and the Symbolos mountain range.
As part of an ongoing search for new expressions in wine, Nico Lazaridi turned to the renowned Greek variety Xinomavro, enriching its range.
The news of Lazaridis’ death was announced by the company’s management on its official social media account, which stated:
“We are sad to announce the loss of Nikos Lazaridis. A man who made every step he took a point of reference. From marble to wine, with vision, boldness, and dedication, he left behind a legacy that marks the identity of his homeland. His contribution and his work will continue to inspire his homeland and all those who had the good fortune to know him”
