Police investigations into the murders or a 39-year-old and 56-year-old in Vorizia, Heraklion, Crete, are expanding — extending to houses, other areas, and possible hideouts of the three brothers sought in connection with last Saturday morning’s bloody incident. The brothers, along with two of their relatives who are hospitalised at PAGNI, are facing charges based on the case file compiled by police. The 39-year-old man from the other family, who was killed in the shootout, was buried in his village yesterday afternoon.
Today, police searched three houses in the Rethymno area belonging to relatives of the wanted men, hoping to locate them, but without success. One of the homeowners was arrested, however, for illegal possession of a firearm — a 9mm pistol that, according to investigators, is not linked to the deadly confrontation.
According to Hellenic Police spokesperson Konstantia Dimoglidu, “Searches will continue with undiminished intensity in all areas where the three brothers or other individuals believed to be involved in the bloody incident — which left two dead and four injured — might have fled.”
As part of efforts to apprehend the suspects, investigations will also extend to rural and livestock facilities, mountain shelters, and other locations.
“The searches will not stop until everyone involved in the deadly incident is arrested,” Ms Dimoglidu emphasised.
At this stage, police are particularly concerned about how to manage the volatile situation that has developed since the vendetta killings, as both families are reportedly enraged, and the risk of renewed violence remains extremely high should authorities relax their vigilance even slightly.
For this reason, the 39-year-old’s funeral yesterday took place under draconian security measures, while similarly strict precautions have been planned for the funeral of the 56-year-old woman from the other family, scheduled for tomorrow in Chania.
Meanwhile, strong police forces — including local special units and an EKAM team deployed from Athens — remain stationed in Vorizia, monitoring all movement in the area.
In managing the situation, the Hellenic Police have also scheduled a new meeting in Heraklion within hours, chaired by the Chief of Police, Lieutenant General Dimitris Mallios, to review current developments and determine the next steps of the investigation.
