Two men who were spotted butchering a kangaroo last Tuesday in a Deryneia apartment complex car park obtained the animal from a farm owned by a Greek Cypriot in the free Famagusta area, police have established.
A 36-year-old man remains in custody regarding the incident, while a second person is still being sought. The suspect, who was residing illegally in Cyprus after his asylum application was rejected in 2022, was remanded in custody yesterday by the Famagusta District Court in Paralimni.
Claims before Famagusta Police suggest the animal was delivered already dead, though this will be confirmed by a post-mortem examination scheduled for Monday by Veterinary Services. The farm owner will be questioned, and Veterinary Services will investigate whether the animals were properly registered as required by law.
The case came to light when police received a complaint on Tuesday afternoon about two suspects butchering an animal in an apartment building car park. Officers responding to the scene found plastic bags containing butchered kangaroo parts, an axe and five knives.
The 36-year-old was arrested at the scene while the other man managed to escape. When taken to Deryneia Police Station, it was discovered he had been residing illegally in Cyprus.
The suspect faces charges including subjecting an animal to pain, suffering, injury or fear, causing an animal to suffer a horrific death, possession of a prohibited animal and illegal residence in the Republic.
