Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham have been handed an eye-catching draw in the revamped and extended 36-team Europa League.
The Australian head coach will face ties against Serie A side Roma and Scottish giants Rangers after his side qualified by finishing fifth in last season’s English Premier League.
The tournament’s league phase has four pots with nine clubs each, divided according to club coefficient. Clubs will face eight different teams with four games at home and four away, picked with the help of a computer.
Tottenham, winners of the tournament’s inaugural edition in 1972, are back in European competition following a year-long hiatus. They will also face Galatasaray, Alkmaar, Ferencvaros, Qarabag, Elfsborg and Hoffenheim.
Manchester United, England’s other entrants in Europe’s second-tier club competition, also take on Rangers, along with a match against former coach Jose Mourinho’s new club, Fenerbahce.
Chelsea, the EPL’s representatives in the third-level European Conference tournament, face a six-match initial stage, including ties with Ireland’s Shamrock Rovers and Greek side Panathinaikos.
